Rick Smith, Securus Technologies, Then and Now

Richard (Rick) Smith, CEO and President of Securus Technologies, a prison tech company that specializes in civil and criminal justice technology solutions by solving and preventing criminal behavior in and out of prisons. In addition, they provide emergency response, communications, incident management, biometric analysis and public information and inmate self-service. The company also conducts monitoring service for not only prisons, but also for business owners. Always at the forefront and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the company was established in 1986, it now employs 5000 people. The company serves more than 3,400 public safety, law enforcement and corrections agencies and over 1.2 million inmates across North America, and is committed to be the best in the industry.

Mr. Smith began his employment with the company in 2008 with years of experience in the telecommunications industry, which helped lift him into his present position as President and CEO. Before his promotion at Securus Technologies he worked at Eschelon Telecom Inc. In 1998-2000 Smith worked as its CFO and became the company’s President and CEO between the years of 2000-2003 and increased Eschelon Telecom’s revenue from $30 million to $350 million. In 2005 he elevated the company as an IPO and left Eschelon Telecom Inc in 2007, but began as a board member for the company in 2009. Prior to running Eschelon, he was positioned at Frontier Corporation for 20 years, climbing the ladder to its Vice-Presidency of Financial Management. Rick was also employed by Midwest Telephone Operations’ as their Vice President, Network Plant Operations’ Director of Business Development as well as Vice President of the company’s financial management.

Along with his experience in the field, Smith also received much education to help facility his career. He has an Associate degree in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, a MBA from the University of Rochester, a Masters in mathematics and a BS in electrical engineering, both from the State University of New York.Securus Technologies provides and continues to upgrade and create solutions for the safety and security technology for its customers and inmates. The company also provides solutions for inmates to contact their families and love ones through activities, phone calls, emails, and internet video calls. This adds to the safety of correctional officers by aiding the prison population with handling their prison stay.Rick touches on the thousands of letters and emails the company has received from satisfied customers regarding their services. The letters and emails applaud their involvement with the safety they have received for themselves, society, inmates and their families.
