GTL is a network provider tasked with offering calls to inmates. The company is supposed to charge these calls according to certain criteria, which they had breached.

During the release of the first of the reports, Richard A. Smith, the CEO of Securus Technologies said that it was a shame to see a company that works for law enforcers, and prisons involving itself in shady business. He also stated that enterprises in their field of operation were required to get motivation from providing the best for the clients and not extorting more money from them.
PR Newswire adds that Securus Technologies promises to release the evidence gradually for up to six months. They have findings from the Louisiana Public Service Commission to prove that they are not on a witch-hunting mission against GTL. They hope to achieve integrity at the end of these releases to boost trust with clients in the industry.
The first revelation was Order No. U-20784-B, which was a seventeen-page document by the Louisiana PSC. It provides some of the actions that GTL is liable of conducting. The primary role of Global Tel Link was to offer outgoing calls to the thousands of people in American correctional facilities. The company carried out its mandate but did so wrongly.
GTL conducted shady business on several occasions. By setting up their telephones to add some seconds to an inmate’s call, GTL was making illegal profits from the unsuspecting users. The telephones by GTL had also been set up to charge more than it was allowed. Global Tel Link had developed a program to ensure that they could bill one call several times. All the tweaks to the system by GTL was all about making more profits. The company was accused of overcharging American taxpayers an amount more than $1,243,000.
Smith added that he would not have released the document if it was only a potential crime. He said that GTL had kept up the wrongdoings, and an immediate action was required. He also stated that though the offenses happened a long time ago, justice should still prevail.
